Advertising Adultery
May 24th, 2010 by Jay Tidwell

Adultery is often a marriage killer and yet it appears that NBC may soon be running an ad for an adultery website. (Reference)  I hate even to reference the article due to the chance of connecting people to the website.  I have know about the website for awhile, due to my following news articles related to marriage.  The owner actually tries to justify the website as a marriage saver and is married himself.  For some reason he never answered any question about what he would think if his wife used his website.  It does not take much of a leap that this is just a method of making money by playing to peoples weaknesses.

The existence of the site and others like it is no surprise.  When I around town, I can not help but pass a strip club.  While I have not found a source to verify it, I believe Martinsburg, WV has more strip bars per person than anywhere in the nation.  Just logging on to the internet it is hard not to be bombarded with ads related to sex and none of them would I consider healthy in any way.

The surprising part is that a major network is not only looking at accepting ads from them, but is actually seeking them out.  This is a sign of continued deterioration of our culture.  Sin is a slippery slop. We do not normally go out and just go have an affair. It usually is a slow thing that is a result of a bunch of small mistakes that leads up to having an affair.  Now it appears that adultery is being declared to be a small step and an acceptable one.

Speaking from personal and counseling experience, adultery is one of the hardest things from which a marriage can recovery.  Trust is lost for at a minimum of 2 years.  Even after many years it still will have an affect on the marriage.  I’m not saying that recover is not possible, but that it takes work and time.  As a case in point our marriage is not only stronger, but much more fulfilling than it ever was before.

“My advice to decision makers promoting infidelity during prime time is take off the blinders. ‘Have an affair’ is not a healthy message to send to adults during prime time, much less children who might be watching,” said advertising and media expert, Steve Hall. “In advertising it’s important to remember which way is up. Imagine finding out your spouse had an affair on a dating site promoted during prime time? How would your kids feel?”

In our selfishness we often forget about the consequences.  Steve Hall is correct to remind us that what we do affects those around us.  We also do not realizes the consequences.  When one has an affair and/or gets a divorce, they are breaking their sacred vows they made before God, their family, and wedding guests.  Those of us who are married need to remember our vows.  It is not enough just to stay married, we must also continue to build our marriage.

Marriage is meant to be so much more, start living it!
